Welcome to Picked Fruit.
Picked Fruit offers handmade crocheted garments and bags and is founded upon honoring and raising awareness for the wellbeing of California’s farmworkers. Our products are meant to highlight the joy in the simple parts of the everyday. A bag isn’t just a thing to hold your other things – it’s an interactive accessory, a part of your silhouette, an extension of your outfit. And a fruit is not just a healthy snack – it is a natural gift from the earth, and a good so precious that over half a million people labor to harvest and feed the entire country.
Inherent to arts and crafts is the appreciation of patience, dexterity, and determination. You quite literally must be determined to see the fruits of your labor. To California’s farmworkers, these values are necessary to their respective craft but unfortunately, they are not properly compensated nor treated fairly despite being the most essential workers of all.
Our farmworkers are among poorest workers in the U.S. Hazardous conditions are routine and include pesticide exposure, heat stress, and lack of shade and clean drinking water. At least half of our farmworkers are undocumented immigrants, making them among the least politically powerful employees in the nation but also the most vital to our economy and wellbeing. There is much more nuance and history to these issues, andI encourage you to learn more at these resources:
Picked Fruit chooses to empower farmworkers in the small way that we can by donating 10% of all profits to the California Farmworker Foundation (CFF) and continuing to raise awareness for workers' rights. One of our favorite quotes is: “The day you plant the seed is not the day you eat the fruit.” Craft, growth, and change all take time, but the result is always worth it. Think about that the next time you run your hand along the stitches of your hand-knit bag, or taste your favorite fruit as the precious product that it is.
How to wash your crocheted garment!
Your crocheted garment can be washed in the washing machine on a gentle cycle using either cold or warm water, or hand washed and potentially very slightly reshaped if desired!
